SMILE December 2025 Update

SMILE December 2025 Update

As you are aware SMILE recently carried out a survey of village residents to demonstrate the need for a village hall for Stoney Middleton. The purpose of this was to enable us to approach funders, to generate the still significant shortfall in funds to enable the build to proceed

However, the results of the survey have indicated that whilst there is a real desire for increased connection and cohesion amongst village residents, it did not evidence anything like the sort of demand that would convince funders to invest in building a village hall

The SMILE committee are therefore exploring other options for utilising the significant funds that have been collected for the benefit of the residents of the village. Some of those ideas were generated through the survey results.

These include:

  • revising the building plans and appealing to the Peak Park planning authority to enable the building of a cheaper village hall on the playing fields, and/or,

  • collaborating with the current owners of the old laundry to pilot some indoor village events.

Any future updates will be posted on Facebook, the SMILE website, the notice board opposite The Moon and village flyers

Smiling is infectious

July 28, 2014
We have had a poem sent in to us from the wonderful Brenda Wragg who helped us enormously at Village Day selling her own wonderful preserves and chutneys but also donating 3 hampers to the raffle.

SMILE

Smiling is infectious
You can catch it like the flu
When someone smiled at me today
I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner
And someone saw my grin,
When he smiled I realised
I'd passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile
And realised its worth
A single smile like mine
Could travel round the earth.
So if you feel a smile begin
Don't leave it undetected
Let's start an epidemic quick
And get the world infected.
Go on, pass it on!

SMILE 1940s Themed Tea Dance

June 22, 2012
We had a great evening of fantastic music and song on April 23rd at Calver Village Hall at our 1940s Themed Tea Dance. Homemade cakes and sandwiches kindly donated by Cllr. Kath Potter, Annie Mitchell & Alison Crump, who couldn't come but still gave generously.
The hall was decorated with bunting and Union flags and tables were groaning under the weight of all sorts of sandwiches which the committee managed to make with their rations and with help from local butcher LW Hancock & Son.
Music was provided by the Nick Chandley Band, well-known musicians who regularly perform at Sheffield City Hall. Our friend and regular chanteuse Lucy Hope sang 40s favourites not only in English but in French and Lili Marlene in German too.
The event attracted all ages from 5 to 90 year olds, but it was the 90 year olds that showed the rest of us up.
A huge "Thank You" to all who attended, bought raffle tickets, donated cakes & prizes and their time.
