SMILE is working hard to improve village life by organising social events during the year to bring people together. We hold a Village Day in early summer and a series of evening get-togethers in the Moon Inn such as Italian night, St. George’s Day, Pie nights, a 1940s Tea Dance amongst others. We want to do so much more so we’re busy fund-raising to build a village hall. The hall will act as a focal point for the whole community. We see it being a drop in centre where the kettle is always on and it will be organising all sorts of activities for all ages. You will be able to hire the hall for all your life events too, from a kid’s birthday party to a wedding!
The building will be “L” shaped with one arm being a multi-functional space with a kitchen and the other arm will have toilets and changing rooms for Stoney Middleton Football Club and for other sporting activities happening on the playing field. One arm will be where the green portakabin is currently and the other arm will hug the football pitch.
We can hear what you’re saying “Just get the thing built!” Well we’ve got some good news on that front. We are ready to start. Stoney Middleton Parish Council has quite rightly requested us to deliver a facility that will be a financially self-sustaining asset for many years to come and not a half-built eye-sore. We have overcome a major obstacle just recently, by securing a local source for our stone at a very good price. We now have enough money to erect a water-tight building, which we can then work on to finish the interior. To achieve this we need help. We are hoping to limit future expenditure. Do you have ideas on how we can source the materials and fixtures and fittings and labour. We need people who can take the build forward, you might have project management or building experience. If you haven’t got either but are keen and have boundless energy then you’re the person we’re looking for. Please get in touch.
